The Myth of "Always Save Your Points for 5-Star Luxury Hotels"

In most hotel loyalty programs, conventional wisdom says you should hoard your points exclusively for flagship 5-star properties, like InterContinental, Kimpton, Six Senses, Regent, or Vignette Collection: and never spend points at midscale Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, or Garner Hotel properties.

When we analyzed 534,983 live nightly rate rows across tracked IHG hotels on IHG Points Finder, we discovered that IHG One Rewards breaks that rule completely:

• Some InterContinental and Kimpton stays deliver Exceptional (≥ €60 / 10k pts) value, up to €91.6 per 10,000 points at InterContinental Phuket Resort (PHUKB) and €84.9 per 10,000 points at Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella (QRLKM).
• But other InterContinental, Kimpton, and Iberostar Selection stays sink right down to €37.4–€40.0 per 10,000 points (Poor to borderline Fair), where paying cash is far smarter.
• Meanwhile, well-timed Holiday Inn, Garner Hotel, Crowne Plaza, and Hotel Indigo stays under 30,000 points per night routinely deliver €67.9 to €90.3 per 10,000 points (Exceptional).

Round 1: Luxury Sweet Spots vs. Luxury Traps

Before burning 150,000 to 400,000 points on a 3-night luxury stay, check how widely luxury brands diverge in € per 10,000 points during the exact same month (November 2026):

Look at the contrast between the two Kimptons:

• Kimpton Quinta da Marinha in Cascais (CATOQ, Nov 6–9) costs 103,700 points for a €807.32 stay (€77.9 per 10k pts).

Even within the Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands in the same country, two properties a few kilometers apart can sit at opposite ends of the value gauge:

   • Crowne Plaza London - Ealing (LONEA, Nov 14–17): €382.76 cash vs. 108,000 pts = €35.4 per 10k pts (Poor).
2. Frankfurt (FRAHM vs. FRAIF):
   • Holiday Inn Express Frankfurt Airport - Raunheim (FRAHM, Nov 26–29): €285.97 cash vs. 43,000 pts = €66.5 per 10k pts (Exceptional).
   • Holiday Inn - the niu, Air Frankfurt Messe (FRAIF, Nov 28–Dec 1): €169.14 cash vs. 49,000 pts = €34.5 per 10k pts (Poor).
3. Dublin (DUBMO & DUBTB vs. DBLCT & DBLIC):
   • Ruby Molly Hotel Dublin (DUBMO, Nov 2–5): €480.15 cash vs. 81,600 pts = €58.8 per 10k pts (Great).
   • Garner Hotel Dublin Temple Bar (DUBTB, Nov 22–25): €295.85 cash vs. 52,700 pts = €56.1 per 10k pts (Great).
   • Holiday Inn Express Dublin City Centre (DBLCT, Nov 15–18): €346.05 cash vs. 77,000 pts = €44.9 per 10k pts (Fair).
   • InterContinental Dublin (DBLIC, Nov 5, 1n): €313.31 cash vs. 79,000 pts = €39.7 per 10k pts (Poor).

Luxury brands by region (October 30, 2026 data)

We priced 298 one-night reward stays at 126 luxury and lifestyle hotels (InterContinental, ANA InterContinental, Kimpton, Regent, Six Senses, Vignette Collection and HUALUXE) on Wednesday November 18, Saturday November 21 and Wednesday December 9, 2026. Prices come from IHG Points Finder's live search in US dollars and are shown here in euros at the site's rate that day (1 € = $1.1172). €50 per 10,000 points is Great and €60 is Exceptional.

• A luxury night in the UK and Ireland cost a median 101,000 points, about three times the 33,000 to 36,000 points in India, Southeast Asia and Greater China, and it returned less per point (€48.9 against €55.5 to €56.6).
• North America was the best region for luxury redemptions, at a median €59.5 per 10,000 points, with 93.2% of nights at €50 or more.
• Across all 298 luxury nights the median was €54.1 per 10,000 points, against €51.5 for the 2,562 nights at other IHG brands.
• The most expensive nights did best. Nights costing €450 or more in cash (132 nights at 86 hotels) had a median of €55.8 per 10,000 points, with 77.3% at €50 or more. Cheaper price bands sat between €51.4 and €52.1.
