Short answer: use points when the cash price works out to at least €50 per 10,000 points (about $56), and pay cash when it is under €40 (about $45). In our live check of 3,953 IHG hotel nights on October 31, 2026, 61.2% of nights cleared the use-points line, 33.3% sat in the middle where either choice is fine, and 5.5% were clearly better paid in cash.
So points are usually a fair deal at IHG, but not always, and the misses are not random. They cluster in certain brands and cities, and they get more common on quiet nights in January.
How we got these numbers
On October 31, 2026 we asked the IHG Points Finder live search for one-night stays in all 62 featured cities on Saturday November 21, Tuesday November 24 and Thursday December 10, 2026, and Tuesday January 19, 2027. We kept every night with both a cash rate and a points price: 3,953 nights at 1,101 hotels in 59 cities. Doha, Dubai and Taipei are left out because their cash prices came back in local currency that morning.
Value per 10,000 points is cash price divided by points price, times 10,000. The lines are the ones IHG Points Finder uses to grade every night: under €40 per 10,000 points means pay cash, €40 to €50 means either is fine, €50 or more means use points, and €60 or more is exceptional. In US dollars on October 31 those lines were $44.70, $55.90 and $67.00. Cash prices are as observed and may not include every tax and fee.
The headline numbers
| Measure | Share of 3,953 nights |
|---|---|
| Under $44.70 per 10k (pay cash) | 5.5% |
| $50 per 10k or more (beats 0.5 cents a point, the usual sale price for buying points) | 83.0% |
| $55.90 per 10k or more (use points) | 61.2% |
| $67.00 per 10k or more (exceptional) | 15.3% |
The median night was worth $58.00 per 10,000 points, or 0.58 US cents a point. For what a whole balance is worth, see IHG points to dollars and euros.
Points or cash by brand

| Ruby | 13 | 47 | $46.50 | 10.6% | 34.0% |
Kimpton had the best median value of the bigger brands, and 44.1% of its nights were exceptional. Ruby is the clear exception at the other end: a third of Ruby nights were pay-cash nights. Regent and the small brands have few hotels, so read them as rough. For hotel-by-hotel picks, see the best InterContinental hotels for points.
Points or cash by cash price
A common belief is that points only make sense on expensive nights. Our data does not really support that. Value per point was close to flat until the very top.
| Cash price per night | Nights | Median points | Median value per 10k | Use points ($55.90+) | Pay cash (under $44.70) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $100 | 639 | 14,000 | $57.80 | 59.3% | 6.7% |
| $100 to $150 | 1,434 | 22,000 | $57.80 | 62.3% | 5.4% |
| $150 to $200 | 823 | 29,000 | $58.50 | 63.7% | 4.3% |
| $200 to $300 | 601 | 40,000 | $58.20 | 58.4% | 5.2% |
| $300 to $500 | 318 | 64,000 | $57.40 | 54.1% | 8.2% |
| $500 and up | 138 | 107,500 | $60.00 | 73.9% | 2.2% |
IHG's points prices follow cash prices closely, so a cheap night usually costs few points and a dear night costs many. The only band that stood out was $500 and up, where nearly three in four nights cleared the use-points line. The practical point: do not assume a cheap night is a waste of points. Check the number.
Weekday vs weekend
We compared the same 819 hotels on Tuesday November 24 and Saturday November 21. Across all of them the median value was identical, $58.80 per 10,000 points on both nights. Saturday cost more in points (median 27,000 against 24,000) and more in cash ($155.56 against $141.96), so the two moved together.
The city mattered more than the day:
| City | Hotels in both nights | Tuesday median per 10k | Saturday median per 10k | Saturday was better value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicago | 45 | $64.50 | $61.10 | 4.4% of hotels |
| San Francisco | 23 | $63.70 | $60.10 | 8.7% of hotels |
| Miami | 27 | $64.90 | $60.10 | 11.1% of hotels |
| New York | 55 | $63.70 | $59.10 | 14.5% of hotels |
| Washington | 59 | $63.90 | $63.10 | 45.8% of hotels |
| London | 52 | $51.50 | $54.75 | 63.5% of hotels |
| Shanghai | 72 | $57.00 | $65.15 | 77.8% of hotels |
| Berlin | 22 | $57.40 | $62.90 | 81.8% of hotels |
In big US cities, a weeknight was usually the better use of points. In business-heavy cities like Berlin, London and Shanghai, Saturday was. This is one weekday and one weekend night, so see our weekday vs weekend guide for six date pairs.
Does the date matter?
| Night | Nights priced | Median value per 10k | Use points | Pay cash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sat Nov 21, 2026 | 867 | $58.70 | 64.1% | 4.5% |
| Tue Nov 24, 2026 | 993 | $58.90 | 63.9% | 5.2% |
| Thu Dec 10, 2026 | 1,015 | $58.50 | 64.2% | 2.4% |
| Tue Jan 19, 2027 | 1,078 | $56.40 | 53.6% | 9.4% |
The quiet mid-January Tuesday was the weakest night for points. Cash prices drop on nights like that, and points prices do not always fall as far, so pay-cash nights almost quadrupled compared with December 10.
Reward night discounts and the fourth night free
Two things can tip a borderline night toward points.
First, some reward nights show a points discount. In our pull, 140 nights had one, and their median value was $67.00 per 10,000 points, against $57.90 for nights without. 80.7% of discounted nights cleared the use-points line.
Second, the fourth night free that comes with the US IHG One Rewards credit cards from Chase. In our October 30 pull of 313 four-night stays, it cut the points cost by a median 25.9% and lifted the median value from $53.90 to $74.30 per 10,000 points. Before the benefit, 29.7% of stays were under $50 per 10,000 points. After it, none were. Details by city are in our fourth night free guide.
Where cash wins more often
The cities with the most pay-cash nights, among those with at least 50 nights priced:
| City | Nights | Median value per 10k | Use points | Pay cash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester | 124 | $49.30 | 15.3% | 21.0% |
| London | 279 | $51.30 | 30.5% | 18.6% |
| Munich | 65 | $52.80 | 32.3% | 15.4% |
| Istanbul | 80 | $51.30 | 28.7% | 11.2% |
| Edinburgh | 55 | $49.70 | 27.3% | 10.9% |
Compare that with Chicago (197 nights, 95.9% use points, 0% pay cash) and Washington (235 nights, 91.5% use points, 0.9% pay cash). If you are spending points in the UK or Germany, it pays to check hotel by hotel. Our London points guide lists the London hotels that held their value.
A simple rule of thumb
- Divide the cash price by the points price and multiply by 10,000.
- €50 or more per 10,000 points (about $56): use points.
- €40 to €50 (about $45 to $56): either is fine. Pay cash if you want to earn points and elite credit, or if you are saving points for a better night.
- Under €40 (about $45): pay cash and keep your points.
- On a four-night stay with the fourth night free, redo the maths with three nights of points. It often moves a borderline stay into use-points territory.
You do not need to do the division by hand. The Compare view on IHG Points Finder shows the cash and points price for the IHG hotels in your cities on your dates and grades each night from Poor (pay cash) to Exceptional. Open a hotel's Value History to see whether today's value is normal for that hotel, and add an unbooked stay to My Trips to be told when it reaches the value you want.
