Short answer: in our live check on Saturday October 31, 2026, 140 of 3,953 IHG reward nights (3.5%) showed a 15% points discount. They were at 47 hotels in 24 cities. The discounted nights were worth a median $67.00 per 10,000 points, against $57.90 for nights without a discount, so they are usually a better use of points. IHG shows some reward nights with a crossed-out points price and a lower one next to it. Every discount we saw on October 31 was exactly 15%. IHG does not publish which hotels or dates get it, so this guide shows what we actually found rather than a rule.
The numbers at a glance
- Discounted nights: 140 of 3,953 (3.5%), on all four test nights. Sat Nov 21: 30. Tue Nov 24: 38. Thu Dec 10: 35. Tue Jan 19 2027: 37.
- Hotels with at least one discounted night: 47, in 24 cities.
- Size of the discount: always 15%. The median saving was 4,500 points a night, and the biggest was 16,650 points (Kimpton El Castelar Polanco in Mexico City, 111,000 down to 94,350).
- Value: a median of $67.00 per 10,000 points on discounted nights, against $57.90 on the others.
- The same 47 hotels had only 14 priced nights without the discount, too few to say how much of the gap comes from the discount itself and how much from the hotels.
- Verdicts: 113 of the 140 came out as a good use of points, 21 as either way, and 6 as pay cash.

Another 12 cities had one discounted hotel each: Amsterdam, Budapest, Frankfurt, Geneva, Lisbon, Osaka, San Francisco, Shanghai, Stockholm, Vancouver, Venice and Zurich.
By brand, Ruby had the most discounted hotels (8), then Holiday Inn Express (6) and Holiday Inn Express & Suites (6). Holiday Inn, Kimpton and Vignette Collection had 4 each.

Value per 10,000 points is the cash price for the same night divided by the points price, times 10,000. Cash is the USD rate IHG Points Finder saw. Each hotel appears once, on its best discounted night.

The Orlando waterpark resort is the standout. It was discounted on three of the four nights and came out above $110 per 10,000 points each time, about twice the typical value. More in our Orlando guide.
When 15% off is still a bad deal
A discount on an expensive points price can still leave you worse off than paying cash. These discounted nights all came in below $44.70 per 10,000 points, IHG Points Finder's pay-cash line:

Five of the six are Ruby hotels. Ruby had the most discounts of any brand, but its discounted nights were worth a median of only $47.70 per 10,000 points. Across all Ruby nights, the median was $46.50, the lowest of any brand we priced. A Ruby discount often just brings a poor points price closer to fair.
How to use reward night discounts well
- Treat the discount as a prompt to check, not a reason to book. Compare the points price with the cash price for the same night.
- Aim for $55.90 or more per 10,000 points. That is where IHG Points Finder calls a night a good use of points.
- Combine it with the fourth night free if you have a US IHG Chase card and are staying four nights or more. See IHG fourth night free value.
- Check other nights at the same hotel. At the Orlando waterpark resort the discounted Saturday was 14,450 points, while the discounted Tuesday and Thursday were 12,750.
