IHG PointBreaks in 2026: What Happened, and What Replaced It

8 min read Updated 31 Oct 2026

The last IHG PointBreaks list expired in January 2020. On Oct 31, 2026, 448 IHG nights still cost 15,000 points or less, from 6,000 in Shanghai.

Short answer: IHG PointBreaks no longer exists. The last list expired on January 31, 2020, and IHG then said it had no new PointBreaks promotion planned. We have seen no sign of it since. Reward nights are now priced dynamically, so the points price moves with the cash rate.

The good news is that cheap reward nights did not disappear with it. In our live check on Saturday October 31, 2026, 448 of 3,953 IHG reward nights (11.3%) cost 15,000 points or less, the top PointBreaks tier. They were spread across 180 hotels in 24 cities, and the cheapest was 6,000 points. You can check any hotel and date in the free IHG points calculator.

What PointBreaks was

PointBreaks was a list IHG published every few months of hotels you could book for a fixed low points price. For years it was 5,000 points a night. In early 2018 IHG moved to three tiers of 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 points. The last list expired on January 31, 2020. The next one was due on January 27, 2020 and never appeared, and IHG told The Points Guy and LoyaltyLobby: "We do not have a new IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks promotion planned currently."

You will still see PointBreaks mentioned on some points-value pages and in older forum threads. If a page tells you to wait for the next PointBreaks list, it is out of date.

What replaced it: dynamic pricing

IHG One Rewards has no award chart now. Each night has its own points price, and it tends to follow the cash rate. That means two things:

  1. A cheap night in points is usually a cheap night in cash too. Every 10,000-point night we priced on October 31 had a cash rate under $100.
  2. You no longer wait for a list. You look for the nights where the points price is low compared with what you would pay in cash.

That second point matters more than the headline points number. Across all 3,953 nights we priced, a typical night was worth $58.00 per 10,000 points, or 0.58 US cents a point. The 448 nights at 15,000 points or less did a bit better, at a median of $63.65 per 10,000 points. Only 5 of them (1.1%) came out below the line where paying cash wins.

Shanghai and Beijing had 289 of the 448. Outside China, Germany, Istanbul, Osaka and Orlando are where to look.

Cheapest nights we found, outside mainland China

Every hotel outside mainland China that had a night at 11,000 points or less, on its cheapest night of the four. Cash is the USD rate IHG Points Finder saw for the same night. Value is cash divided by points, times 10,000.

Just above that line, four Garner hotels in Europe were at 12,000 points: Berlin Charlottenburg (Saturday November 21, $92.39 cash, $77.00 per 10,000 points), Vienna (Tuesday January 19, $85.69, $71.40), Frankfurt Main Station (Thursday December 10, $82.35, $68.60) and Munich Messe (Thursday December 10, $69.27, $57.70). Candlewood Suites Berlin Airport was 11,900 points after a 15% discount, and Holiday Inn Resort Orlando Suites - Waterpark was 12,750 points for a $151.60 night, or $118.90 per 10,000 points.

In mainland China the cheapest was 6,000 points at Holiday Inn Express Shanghai Jinqiao Central on Saturday November 21, 2026 ($44.95 cash, $74.90 per 10,000 points). Several Shanghai Holiday Inn Express hotels were at 7,000 points.

Notice the Garner hotels. IHG's newer midscale brand turned up again and again at 8,000 to 12,000 points in Osaka, Kyoto, Istanbul, Berlin, Vienna, Frankfurt and Munich. If you want the old PointBreaks feel, Garner is the closest thing right now.

Cheap is not always good value

A low points price does not always mean a good use of points. Five of the 448 cheap nights were worth less than $44.70 per 10,000 points, which is where IHG Points Finder says to pay cash instead. Two examples from October 31:

Always check the cash price for the same night before you spend points. You can do that for any date in the IHG points calculator.

How to find PointBreaks-style nights yourself

  1. Search a city on IHG Points Finder for your dates and compare the points prices hotel by hotel.
  2. Check the value per 10,000 points next to each one. Above $55.90 is a good use of points, below $44.70 pay cash.
  3. Watch for a 15% points discount. On October 31, 140 nights showed one, and those were worth more than average. See IHG reward night discounts.
  4. Try a weeknight. Our January 19 test night (a Tuesday) had the lowest median value of the four, so do not assume every weeknight wins. Compare the dates you can travel.
  5. If you stay four nights or more with a US IHG Chase card, the fourth night free can bring the per-night cost down further.

Quick answers

Is IHG PointBreaks coming back in 2026?

We have seen no sign of it. The last list expired on January 31, 2020, and reward nights are now priced dynamically.

What replaced IHG PointBreaks?

Nothing with the same name. Dynamic pricing means some hotels now sit at 15,000 points or less on many nights. On October 31, 2026 we found 448 such nights at 180 hotels in 24 cities.

What was the cheapest IHG reward night on October 31, 2026?

6,000 points at Holiday Inn Express Shanghai Jinqiao Central for Saturday November 21, 2026. Outside China, 7,650 points at ANA Holiday Inn Kobe Sanda for Tuesday November 24, after a 15% discount.

How much were PointBreaks nights?

5,000 points a night for most of the promotion's life, then 5,000, 10,000 or 15,000 points from early 2018 until it ended.

Are cheap IHG nights a good use of points?

Usually. The median value of nights at 15,000 points or less was $63.65 per 10,000 points on October 31, above the $58.00 median for all nights. But check each one, because a few were below the pay-cash line.

Data note: we used the IHG Points Finder live search, the same data behind the homepage calculator, for 62 featured cities and four single nights: Saturday November 21, Tuesday November 24, Thursday December 10 2026 and Tuesday January 19 2027. Requests ran on Saturday October 31, 2026 between 10:08 and 10:19 Dublin time. We kept every hotel night with both a points price and a cash price: 3,953 nights at 1,101 hotels in 59 cities. Doha, Dubai and Taipei were left out because their cash prices came back in local currency. Cash prices are the rates IHG Points Finder saw and may not include every tax and fee. Prices change daily, so treat this as a dated snapshot. PointBreaks history is from The Points Guy (January 29, 2020) and LoyaltyLobby, which both reported IHG's statement. IHG Points Finder is independent and not affiliated with IHG.
